Biosphere Park


The Great Walser Valley Biosphere Park is a model region for modern and lasting economics in the Alpine region.

The Great Walser Valley was awarded the title Biosphere Park by UNESCO (Man and Biosphere) in the year 2000.  The 6 communities belonging to the Biosphere Park, with a total of 3,500 inhabitants are:


1. Raggal/Marul

2. Thüringerberg - or Thuering Mountain

3. St. Gerold

4. Blons

5. Sonntag / Buchboden

6. Fontanella / Faschina


A few important facts about the biosphere region:

  • It has a total area of 19,200 hectares
  • It has been a UNESCO Biosphere park since November, 2000
  • The Walser Settlements are comprised of:
  • about 180 Farms
  • about 100 Bio farms
  • about 180,000 overnight stays per year


Awards:


1.  It was awarded the European village modernisation prize in 2002

2.  It was awarded the  - Village of the Future prize in 2003

3.  It has been an energy efficient region with 3 e‘s since 2004

4.  It was named an Energy region of the future in 2005

5.  It has been a certified EMAS region since 2004
