The functions and elements of a biosphere reserve

Since the international UNESCO conference in Seville in March, 1995, concerning Biosphere reserves, Biosphere parks must fulfil 3 main functions:

  1. Protection function:  Biosphere parks must contribute to the protection of landscapes, eco-systems, different species and genetic variations.
  2. Development function:  Biosphere parks must be beneficial to economic and social development, sustainable both socio-culturally and environmentally.
  3. Research Function:  Biosphere parks must be favoured areas for environmental research, environmental monitoring, and environmental education.  Scientific information can be exchanged through the world wide Biosphere reserve network.
