Even so, to become a recognized Biosphere reserve, certain UNESCO criteria and functions must be fulfilled and verified. A Biosphere reserve is not an actual conservation area category, but rather a seal of approval from UNESCO. Just like all other brand names, UNESCO audit’s the regions to see if they deserve recognition, on a regular basis. The audit is carried out on the basis of nationally and internationally approved criteria. Vorarlberg is the only state that uses the award of Biosphere park as a conservation area category in its law for nature conservation and landscape development passed in 1997. This means that the provincial government can set up a Biosphere park in areas that meet the fixed Biosphere criteria. |
