Ecology

A unique ecological characteristic of the Silver Fir is its excellent tolerance for shade. Continuous utilization of the Silver Fir will prevent our forests from becoming too old.

Continuous utilization of the Silver Fir will prevent obsolescence and the resulting destabilisation of our woodlands. Regeneration and rejuvenation are ensured and the important role of the Silver Fir as an essential ecological stabiliser is maintained. The Silver Fir is the typical species of tree in the traditional, true to nature varied forests.

The ability of the Silver Fir to thrive in shaded areas is one of its outstanding character traits. This is the factor that makes tiered and stable mixed forests possible. The sapling grows in the shade of the mother tree, and can wait for decades for light and space before establishing a new generation of trees. This makes it an important stabiliser in our mixed forests.

The deep root system of the Silver Fir, made up of tap and peg roots guarantees for storm stabile forests. At the same time, it protects the soil, our most important asset, from erosion and land slides. The mild needle mulch provides for an intact „circle of life“.

Its growing capacity is legendary. Silver Firs are the tallest trees in Europe. When they grow in optimal conditions they reach a height of over 60 meters and live for up to 600 years. The trunk can reach a circumference of two to three meters.
