Our favourite Wood

The architect, Philip Lutz told us why he likes to use Silver Fir timber in his projects.

When asked about the civil engineering aspects, he said:

„Silver Fir wood is practically resin free and therefore it is easy to use unfinished wood for interior fittings.  When used externally, it doesn‘t need stainless steel fasteners like oak or larch do, which keeps the price of the fasteners, which can be quite expensive in facades or slatted frames, down.“

When asked about the ecological aspects, Philip Lutz said:

„Personally, and also my contractors, are looking more and more at adding value locally.  The use of tropical woods as well as the Siberian Larch is becoming increasingly disreputable.  Just look at the ecologically uncontrollable side effects:  I mean what good does a certificate from Russia do us?  The long transportation routes alone defeat any ecological rewards!  In any case, it makes sense to me to give work to our local foresters, saw mills and transport companies instead of putting a strain on the foreign trade balance.  Especially when it comes to timber imports when we have more than enough good timber here.

What architect Philip Lutz said about the aesthetic quality of the Silver Fir:

It is possible to make support beams, casings, furniture, floors and so on from the Silver Fir.  Everything can be made from one piece, which is important for my work as an architect.  If I was working with oak, for example it would be a problem to order support beams, bonding agents or similar items.  When Silver Fir is cut properly, a very nice veneer comes to light over the years, it is knot free or almost knot free, which gives it an elegant appearance at a reasonable price.  I have noticed that when Silver Fir is used outside, it weathers to a very pretty light grey or silver.  Larch, on the other hand turns very dark in some places and becomes drab, an effect that many contractors are starting to reject.  The silvery glow of the Silver Fir makes older houses look striking.  The bad reputation we were getting because of the dark houses, started as a consequence of other types of wood being used.  Sometimes the perfect, knot free Silver Fir wood, reminds me of the long blonde hair of a princess from a fairy tale by the Brother‘s Grimm.  Perhaps the perfect, familiar, homey and magical impression the Silver Fir gives, are the elements that make the room look so comfortable.
