Description

The architect, Anton Nachbaur-Sturm describes the Hittisau Culture Centre as follows:

„At the outermost edge of a steep slope leading to the Subersach Torrent, on a piece of land where there used to be a gravel pit, sits the new Fire Station and Culture Centre, just touching the edge of the forest.  The unusual, yet sensible combination of various functions in one building in the small village structure is the central theme of the concept.  While the Fire Station is oriented towards the main street, in the somewhat ascending terrain, the culture area, as a wooden cuboid, floats above the fire station and opens up to the village through a large glass front.  Dividing both areas using different directions, is strengthened by the use of radically different materials.  The building materials for the fire station are concrete, galvanised steel and glass.  The culture area is tied into the regional building traditions, exclusively using untreated Silver Fir wood for the walls, ceilings and floors.“
