Konrad Schwarz

The Schwarz House in Hittisau. Peter Metzler interviews Konrad Schwarz and Markus Faisst.

Mr. Schwarz, three years ago, you decided to build a house predominantly from Silver Fir wood.  What made you decide that?

First of all, it was the location.  I just couldn‘t imagine building a house with bricks and plaster on this exposed slope so close to the edge of the forest.  It was clear that it could only be a wooden house.  There used to be an old wooden house here that was beyond repair and so we decided to build a new one.  I think that a wooden house fits into the landscape much better.  We decided to use Silver Fir because we had a lot of experience with it when building the fire station and the Culture Centre, and I really liked the vibrancy of the wood.  That was reason enough to use Silver Fir for a private dwelling.  Another thing that helped us decide were the many old houses here in the village that have Silver Fir facades.  We have always liked the silvery grey colour that they turn through weathering.

Did the fact that you were the mayor, and therefore the head of the building commission play a role in setting an example to the citizens that were planning to build?

Actually, just the opposite.  My role as the building authority means I have a lot to do with planning and the materials that are used.  My job taught me a lot and through that, I developed a love for wood, especially for the Silver Fir.
